This show dives into protest and message-driven music from Jamaica, with a focus on the powerful traditions of roots reggae, dub, and dancehall.
For an island of fewer than three million people, Jamaica has produced an astonishing body of recorded music that resonates far beyond its shores. The legacies of colonisation and slavery run deep through these sounds, while the music also speaks directly to present-day realities — housing struggles, racism, crime, police brutality, political corruption, and the everyday experience of “sufferation.” In this way, Jamaican music has always been more than entertainment, serving as a vehicle for truth-telling, resistance, and survival.
The programme features artists like Burning Spear, Tony Tuff, and Super Cat amongst other great voices from the island of Jamaica.
