With rEmPiT g0dDe$$, LnHD, Rully Shabara and merv espina

Index Sound artist Merv Espina, Middle Sound artist Lynn Nandar Htoo & REMPIT G0DDE$$, and Ring Sound artist Rully Shabara will share their creative processes, delving into the sounds of Southeast Asia and the diverse influences that shape their work. From the ecological soundscapes of the Philippines to the ritualistic power of Indonesian music, and the cultural reclamation of Myanmar’s sonic heritage, and the diasporic, industrial club transmissions of Malaysia, each artist shares how they navigate layered soundscapes shaped by history, geography, and resistance. The artists will discuss how their practice bridges historical encounters, contemporary politics, and the crossing of regional tonalities.

How do artists from diverse geographies and cultural backgrounds navigate the layered sonic terrains of Southeast Asia? In this conversation, Espina, Nandar Htoo, REMPIT G0DDE$$, and Shabara will unpack the ways in which they reimagine and reassemble sonic traditions in response to today’s rapidly shifting cultural and political climates. They will explore how music-making becomes an act of resistance, remembrance, and reconfiguration, engaging with both traditional and invented instruments, oral histories, and the geopolitics of noise and silence. The conversation will also delve into how the artists employ cross-media technologies — from field recording kits and modular synthesis to archival systems and DIY software — to create their experimental works.
